History at a glance

1. 1411
   Ahmad Shah I founds the walled city on the eastern bank of the Sabarmati.
2. 1445
   The tomb of the saint Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh is built at Sarkhej, about 8 km out.
3. 15th-17th centuries
   The Indo-Islamic monuments are built — the Bhadra citadel, the city walls and gates, mosques and tombs, and later Hindu and Jain temples.
4. Medieval period
   The pols take shape — gated residential streets built to a community-agreed code of street width, building height and branching dead ends.
5. Six centuries
   The city continues to flourish. Maidan-e-Shahi, the royal square, is now a market.
6. 8 July 2017
   The Historic City of Ahmadabad is inscribed at UNESCO's 41st Session — India's first World Heritage City. Reference 1551, criteria (ii) and (v), 535.7 ha.
