History at a glance

1. Puranic
   Bhimasura, son of Kumbhakarna, wins power from Brahma through penance and torments sages. Shiva manifests here and destroys him. THE SWEAT FROM SHIVA'S BODY IS HELD TO HAVE FORMED THE BHIMA RIVER.
2. 800-1,000 years ago
   A Khombhal climber (Xantolis tomentosa) now growing in the sacred grove of the Mahadev Koli village of Ahupe takes root.
3. Not dated in my sources
   The temple is built in Nagara style with intricate carvings and sculptures.
4. 1984
   Bhimashankar receives official wildlife sanctuary status, covering 120 sq km, established to protect the endemic Indian giant squirrel.
5. Present
   The wildlife department and the temple trust operate as joint custodians of one site.
