Significance & tradition
These sites trace the architectural and political history of the Rajput kingdoms of Rajasthan alongside the Deccan sultanates and Maratha successor states. Several are inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage sites in their own right (the 'Hill Forts of Rajasthan' group), and many remain partly occupied or maintained by descendants of the original royal families.
History
Most of what's visible today was built between the 15th and 18th centuries, though several sites — Chittorgarh among them — have older fortifications beneath their current visible structure.
