Significance & tradition
These gompas represent living Vajrayana Buddhist practice — most remain active monastic institutions, not museum sites, and several (Hemis, Tawang) host major annual masked-dance festivals that are themselves significant cultural events.
History
Most date from between the 11th and 17th centuries, founded during successive waves of Buddhist institution-building in the Himalayan borderlands — a different lineage and history from the Gangetic-plain Ashtamahasthana sites.
