Major Jain Tirtha Sites

A selection of India's most significant Jain pilgrimage sites — Digambara and Svetambara traditions both represented. Not exhaustive; India has hundreds of tirthas.

A curated selection, not an official or closed list — either traditions vary on the full set of sites, or this is an editorial grouping rather than a traditional one.

Significance & tradition

Digambara and Svetambara traditions each maintain their own major tirtha sites, and several sites here — Shravanabelagola with its Gommateshwara monolith among them — carry significance across both broad denominational lines, reflecting Jainism's emphasis on renunciation and the veneration of Tirthankaras (teachers who attained liberation).

History

India has hundreds of recognised Jain tirthas built up over more than two thousand years of continuous practice. The sites listed here are among the most architecturally significant and widely visited — this is not a claim about religious ranking between them.

How this list was compiled

Not exhaustive; a selection of the most-visited major sites across both traditions.
