Panch Kedar

Five Himalayan Shiva temples in Uttarakhand's Garhwal region, traditionally linked in a single legend about the Pandavas and visited together by dedicated trekker-pilgrims.

Significance & tradition

Legend links all five temples to the Pandavas' quest for penance after the Kurukshetra war: Shiva is said to have eluded them by taking the form of a bull and diving underground, and different parts of that bull are said to have resurfaced at each of the five sites (Kedarnath's hump, Tungnath's arms, and so on) — one connected narrative told across five separate mountain shrines.

History

These are remote, high-altitude temples reachable mostly by trek, and completing all five together is a far more physically demanding undertaking than most circuits here — traditionally attempted only by dedicated pilgrims over a single trekking season.
