History at a glance

  1. c. 1000 BCE — CONTESTED
    Bahu Fort is said to have been built by Raja Bahulochan, brother of Jambu Lochan, the traditional founder of Jammu.
  2. 1585 CE
    The earlier fort is rebuilt by Autar Dev, grandson of King Kapoor Dev.
  3. 1707-1733
    Raja Dhruv Dev begins the Mubarak Mandi complex.
  4. 1822
    The Bawey Wali Mata temple is built inside Bahu Fort, shortly after Gulab Singh's coronation.

    The Raghunath temple complex is built — begun by Gulab Singh and completed by his son Ranbir Singh.

    Ranbir Singh builds Ranbireshwar, the Mahamaya temple, his own palace, one for his queens, the Sheesh Mahal, the Gol Ghar and three palaces for his three sons.

    Partap Singh builds a palace for his queen Maharani Charaki and orders extensive renovations of the Pink Hall.
  8. 11 April 1928
    Miss Isabella Plumb lays the foundation stone of St Paul's Church on Wazarat Road — the city's oldest church.
