History at a glance

1. 5th-7th centuries
   The Elephanta caves are cut on Gharapuri island — Shiva images, and a few Buddhist mounds.
2. 1725
   A well said to be revered by Parsees is built at what is now the Oval Maidan.
3. Late 19th century
   The crumbling walls of the old Bombay fort are demolished, and the Victorian Gothic public buildings go up in stone — the High Court, the University, the Police Headquarters, the Rajabai Clock Tower.
4. 1878-1888 approx.
   Victoria Terminus is built to F. W. Stevens's design — UNESCO says 'the terminal was built over 10' years, the passage cut off in my capture.
5. 1911
   The Gateway of India is begun, to commemorate the royal visit of King George V.
6. 1920s onward
   The Backbay Reclamation Scheme creates new land to the west. Over 125 Art Deco buildings follow, planned to W. R. Davidge's designs, along with the Marine Drive sea front.
7. 1924
   The Gateway of India is completed — thirteen years after the visit it commemorates.
8. 1948
   The last British regiment parades through the Gateway of India as it leaves.
9. 1987
   The Elephanta Caves are inscribed.
10. 2004
    Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, formerly Victoria Terminus, is inscribed.
11. 30 June 2018
    The Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai are inscribed at the 42nd session in Manama, Bahrain. Reference 1480, criteria (ii) and (iv).
