History at a glance

1. 1704
   After the Battle of Chamkaur, the Guru journeys towards the Deccan and eventually to Nanded.
2. 1707
   Aurangzeb dies. His successor Bahadur Shah seeks to mend relations and invites the Guru to Delhi.
3. 1708
   The Guru is attacked and wounded. One source says by a group led by Wazir Khan, Mughal governor of Sirhind, while travelling; another says by two would-be assassins at Nanded while he held court.
4. A few days before 7 October 1708
   Guru Gobind Singh ends the line of personal Guruship, conferring Gur-Ta-Gaddi on the Guru Granth Sahib as eternal Guru — and in the same act names the region Abchalnagar, the steadfast city.
5. 7 October 1708
   The Guru dies at Nanded, aged 41. He is cremated at the spot now enclosed by the Angitha Sahib.
6. After 1708
   The Sikh community builds a room over the platform where the Guru held court and installs the Guru Granth Sahib on it, calling it Takht Sahib. Bhai Santokh Singh is told to stay and begin the langar.
7. 1709-1715
   A disciple commissioned here campaigns for seven years, 'shaking the foundation of Mughal Empire in the North-west'.
8. 1832-1837
   Maharaja Ranjit Singh builds the present gurdwara at the cremation site, with funds, artisans and labour sent from Punjab. Five years' work.
9. 2008
   The tercentenary of the Guruship of the Guru Granth Sahib. Nanded sees yearlong celebrations.
