History at a glance

1. Puranic
   Vindhya, deity of the Vindhya range, performs penance and worships a linga of sand and clay. Shiva manifests and, at the request of the gods and sages, DIVIDES THE LINGA IN TWO — Omkareshwar and Amareshwar.
2. Puranic
   King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty, an ancestor of Rama, performs penance here and Shiva appears as a Jyotirlinga. His sons Ambarisha and Muchukunda are also said to have undertaken penance. The hill and island take his name.
3. Puranic texts
   One source says Omkareshwar is mentioned in the Skanda Purana and the Vishnu Purana among the holiest tirthas of central India.
4. 10th-14th centuries
   The island temples are built in Nagara style — stone spires and pillared halls. One source says Siddhanath and the carved fort gateways show the same hand.
5. 18th century
   Rani Ahilyabai Holkar funds reconstruction of both the Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar shrines.
6. Modern
   Bridges, jetties and the Omkareshwar dam transform pilgrim access.
7. September 2023
   The STATUE OF ONENESS is installed — 108 ft, on a 54-ft pedestal with a 27-ft lotus base, under the Ekatma Dham project alongside Advaita Lok and the Acharya Shankar International Institute of Advaita Vedanta.

   One source reports a ropeway under construction.
