History at a glance

1. 11th century
   Queen Udayamati commissions the stepwell at Anahilpur Patan, then the Solanki capital. Master carvers fill seven descending storeys with more than five hundred major sculptures.
2. 13th century
   The Saraswati shifts course. The flood silts the stepwell over completely, ending its function as a well.
3. 1304
   Merutunga's Prabandha Chintamani names Udayamati, wife of Bhima I and mother of Karna, as the patron.
4. 1937
   Repairs begin, per one source.
5. 1980s
   The ASI removes most of the silt, revealing the sculpture almost intact.
6. 2014
   Inscribed by UNESCO at the 38th Session in Doha, reference 922, under criteria (i) and (iv).
7. 2018
   Rani ki Vav appears on the reverse of the lavender 100-rupee note.
