History at a glance

1. 600 BCE - 600 CE
   Pataliputra serves as the capital of Ajatashatru, Chandragupta Maurya and Ashoka, among others in the Magadha sequence from Bimbisara through the Nandas.
2. 1666
   Guru Tegh Bahadur, travelling through Bengal, Assam and Bihar, stays several months in Patna at the house of Salis Rai Johri, a wealthy jewel merchant.
3. 22 December 1666
   Gobind Das is born at Patna while his father is away in Bengal and Assam. The Desi calendar date is Poh Sudi 7 — seven days after the new moon in the lunar month of Poh.
4. 1670
   The family returns to Punjab, after four years in Patna.
5. March 1672
   The family moves to Chakk Nanaki in the Sivalik foothills, where he is schooled.
6. 1699
   He founds the Khalsa at Anandpur Sahib and takes the name Gobind Singh.
7. Early 19th century
   The shrine is reconstructed after a fire. One source credits Maharaja Ranjit Singh with building it.
8. 7 October 1708
   Guru Gobind Singh dies at Nanded, aged 41. Wikipedia's infobox gives the cause as assassination.
9. 1781
   Sir Charles Wilkins visits and writes an account, later published in Asiatic Researches.
10. 1917
    The Patna Museum is established. It holds relics of the Buddha in an art-nouveau case of the same year.
11. Mid-20th century
    The shrine is reconstructed again after an earthquake. One source dates the current building to the 1950s.
12. After the Gurdwara Reform movement
    The Mahant title is dissolved and Jathedars replace their function.
