History at a glance

1. 298 BCE
   Chandragupta Maurya is said to have died on Chandragiri hill, having become a Jain monk and taken up an ascetic life.
2. 7th century onward
   The first of more than 600 rock inscriptions are cut. They continue into the 19th century.
3. 963-999
   Chavundaraya serves as minister and commander under Marasimha II, Rachamalla IV and Rachamalla V of the Talakad Ganga kingdom.
4. 981 CE — CONTESTED
   Chavundaraya commissions the Gommateshwara statue, after his mother Kalala Devi vowed to have it carved. He then organises the first mahamastakabhisheka.
5. 1432 CE
   The 42-foot Bahubali monolith is established at Karkala by Veera Pandya Bhairarasa Wodeyar — the second tallest in the world.
6. 17-25 February 2018
   The Mahamastakabhisheka is performed.
7. 2030
   The next Mahamastakabhisheka.
