History at a glance

1. Puranic
   Vishnu's chakra divides Sati's body; her right foot, including the big toe, falls here.
2. Before 1501
   The goddess is taken from Chandranath, in what is now Bangladesh. The Shiva Lingam there cannot be moved, so only she is carried. By the king's vision she may be moved for one night only; at sunrise she fixes herself to the ground.
3. 1501
   Maharaja Dhanya Manikya builds the temple on the tortoise-backed hillock, in Bengali ek-ratna style.
4. c. 1625 — DISPUTED
   The Kalyan Sagar is dug, under Maharaja Kalian Manikya.
5. 1681
   Maharaja Rama Manikya repairs the temple after storm damage.
6. Early 20th century
   Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya carries out further repairs.
7. Continuing
   The temple receives more visitors than any other in North-East India after Kamakhya, draws pilgrims from India and Bangladesh, and animal sacrifice is practised regularly.
