Significance & tradition
These reserves protect several of India's flagship conservation species — Bengal tigers (Ranthambore, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Corbett), the one-horned rhinoceros (Kaziranga), and Asiatic lions (Gir, home to the species' only wild population left anywhere in the world) — each park's fame tied to a specific, verifiable conservation story rather than general scenery.
History
Many of these parks were established as designated reserves in the mid-20th century, several building on earlier royal or colonial-era hunting grounds that were repurposed for conservation after independence.
