History at a glance

1. 1031
   Vimal Shah, minister and military commander to Bhima I, commissions the Vimal Vasahi, dedicated to Adinatha.
2. 1147-1149
   Prithvipal, a descendant of Vimal Shah, builds the Hastishala, the elephant courtyard.
3. c. 1230
   The Vimal Vasahi's cloister screen of devakulika shrines is added, two centuries after the temple itself.
4. 1230-1231
   Vastupala and Tejapala, brothers and ministers to the Vaghela ruler Viradhavala, build the Luna Vasahi, dedicated to Neminatha.
5. 1440-1448
   One weak source says the pillars of a Dilwara temple were built by Maharana Kumbha of Mewar.
6. 1459-1582
   The three remaining temples are built at intervals.
7. 1582
   The Mahavir Swami temple is completed, closing a building project begun 551 years earlier.
8. 1764
   Artists of Sirohi paint the veranda of the Mahavir Swami temple with dancing figures, court scenes, flowers, horses, pigeons and elephants.
