Ranthambore

History at a glance

1. Mid-10th century — CONTESTED
   Rajput King Sapaldaksha of the Chauhan dynasty lays the foundation of the fort. Successive kings add to it.
2. Medieval
   The fort passes to the Delhi sultanate, then the Mughals, and is held at various times by the Hada and Mewar dynasties. It was 'considered impregnable owing to its strategic location and design'.
3. 17th century
   The fortress passes to the Kachwaha Maharajas of Jaipur and remains part of Jaipur state.
4. 1949-1950
   Jaipur state accedes to India in 1949 and becomes part of Rajasthan in 1950.
5. 1955 — or 1957
   Established as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary, initially 282 km2.
6. 1973
   Project Tiger launches with nine reserves, under its first director Kailash Sankhala and with the IUCN as global catalyst. Ranthambore is among them.
7. 1980 — or 1981
   Declared a national park.
8. 2013
   Ranthambore Fort is inscribed as a component of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan at the 37th session — ID 247rev-003, criteria (ii) and (iii), 102 ha with a 372 ha buffer.
9. 2022
   The national census records more than 3,600 tigers in India, about 75 per cent of the world's wild population.
10. 2026
    Project Tiger covers 58 reserves and almost 2.5 per cent of India's land area.
